North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center Awards
The North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center (SMT Center) is pleased to announce the inaugural SMT Awards. These awards recognize individuals and organizations making extraordinary contributions to science, mathematics, and technology (SMT) education in North Carolina. Profiles of the individuals or organizations honored will be featured on the SMT Center Web site. Award categories include: Outstanding Educator Award, Student Leadership Award, Partnership Award, Business and Industry Award, and Science Champion Award. Outstanding Educator and Student Leadership awards include a $500 prize.
Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching
The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching is awarded to mathematics and science teachers. Teachers must be nominated before completing an application. Nominations may come from anyone (principals, teachers, students, parents, members of the community, or the general public). Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination and application information can be found by visiting www.paemst.org. The application deadline is May 1. American Stars of Teaching
The U.S. Department of Education's Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative is accepting nominations for 2008 American Stars of Teaching until March 31. Parents, students, colleagues, school administrators and others can nominate an exemplary teacher who they believe has the qualities to be an American Star of Teaching. They are seeking nominations of teachers across the United States who are improving student achievement, using innovative strategies in the classroom and making a difference in the lives of their students. Teachers across all grade levels and disciplines will be honored as American Stars of Teaching this fall. To nominate a teacher, go to: http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tools/initiative/index.html.
Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching
The American Geological Institute (AGI) and the AGI Foundation have announced creation of the Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching. Given annually, this award recognizes one classroom teacher from kindergarten to eighth grade for leadership and innovation in Earth science education.
The winner will receive a $2,500 prize and an additional grant of $1,000 to enable the recipient to attend an AGI member society conference. To be eligible for this year’s competition, applications must be postmarked by March 1.

The Walter C. Connolly Award for Teaching at the Pre-College Level
The Walter C. Connolly Award has been set up to reward excellence in teaching physical science at the pre-college level. An Awards Committee of the North Carolina Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers headed by the Section Representative seeks nominations from members and others describing the qualities of such individuals teaching in North Carolina schools. Nomination forms and more detailed information can be received by contacting the Section Representative or the Secretary-Treasurer. Recipients receive a certificate, a cheque for $300, a one-year membership in the national AAPT, and donated items from sponsors. Deadline is December 15

E. Bond Memorial Scholarship Award

Teacher Selected for Environmental Award Raleigh, NC in May: The NC
American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association Public
Education Committee is pleased to announce that Ms. Carolyn Moser of
Leesville Road Middle School has been selected at the recipient of the
Carol E. Bond Memorial Scholarship Award. Ms. Moser is the first person
to be honored with this award, named for the former City of Raleigh
employee who was a long time Public Education Committee member and was
serving as chair at the time of her death in April 1999.
Vernier/NSTA Technology Award
Vernier Software & Technology and the National Science Teacher's Association (NSTA) come together each year to reward those educators who lead students down a hands-on, inquiry-based path with the Vernier Software & Technology/NSTA Technology Award. Vernier will provide up to seven awards, each valued at $3000, for educators who demonstrate innovative uses of data-collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld device in the science classroom. The awards will be given to up to one elementary teacher, two middle school teachers, three high school teachers, and one college-level educator. Each will receive a $1000 cash award, $1000 in Vernier equipment, and $1000 toward travel and expenses to attend NSTA's National Convention . Entries will be judged by a panel of experts appointed by NSTA and are due by October 15. Downloadable applications

The AEF National Teacher of the Year, the Christa McAuliffe Memorial Award
is selected annually and carries a $5,000 cash award to the winner, $2,500 to the first runner-up, and $1000 to the second runner-up. Here are two links link to helpful pages on the AEF web site. The deadline for application for the McAuliffe Award is May 15.

Science and Your Health Challenge
Are you doing something great in science? Reward yourself for your creative
ideas! Certified teachers in grades K-6 are invited to submit entries
that describe an inquiry-based project they have developed and completed
with their students. Submissions must focus on a classroom project used
to help students learn science while engaging in issues related to health.
Winners will receive $1000 for professional development. Applications
are due in December and NSTA will notify the winners by February 1.

Shepard Technology in Education Award
The National Association of Education Technology Specialists, Astronauts
Memorial Foundation, and NASA wants to recognize contributions made
by technology personnel or classroom teachers using technology to help
develop lifelong learners or to facilitate the learning process. Qualified
candidates must be nominated by a school principal, superintendent,
or assistant superintendent. The award recipient will be invited to
a ceremony and will receive a trophy and a laptop computer. Nominations
are due by April 30.

AVS
John Vossen Memorial Award for middle and high school teachers
AVS, The Science and Technology Society wishes to recognize and reward
active and creative middle and high school teachers. The purpose is
to encourage the development of science demonstration experiments involving
reduced pressures (vacuum) or controlled gaseous environments at atmospheric
pressure. Experiments above atmospheric pressure will be considered
only if adequate safety measures are included. The John L. Vossen Memorial
Award consists of an equipment grant to implement the experiment, a
cash prize and reimbursement of travel expenses to attend to the AVS
2002 International Symposium in Denver, CO. Deadline: February 28. Call

Groundwater
Awards
The Groundwater Foundation, a national nonprofit organiza- tion dedicated
to educating the public about the nature and value of groundwater, is
now accepting nominations for its three national awards. The awards
honor those indivi- duals who create a legacy of groundwater protection
through local action, education, and government service.
