Classroom Earth National High School Challenge

To help provide teachers around the country with support for their innovative work to bring environmental education into the classroom, the National Environmental Education Foundation is launching the Classroom Earth National High School Challenge - an opportunity for up to 25 teachers to secure as much as $5,000 to $10,000 in funding to bring innovative environmental themes into their coursework. The Hach Scientific Foundation

is offering funding to chemistry teachers through its Outreach Program.. Grants up to $1500 will be awarded to support high school chemistry teachers who have creative ideas of transforming the learning in their classrooms. The application is a fairly straight forward, one page document that is due May 31, 2008. This opportunity was fostered through the relationship between the University of Rhode Island and The Hach Foundation but is available to all HS Chemistry teachers from around the country. Toyota Tapestry Grant

Winning the Toyota TAPESTRY grant was the highlight of my professional life,” said a recipient of the award. The new Toyota TAPESTRY 2008 online application is now available! For 2008 Toyota will be awarding 75-82 grants totaling $550,000 to teachers who would like to implement an innovative science project in physical science, environmental science or integrating literacy & science. The program is open to middle and high school science teachers and elementary teachers who teach some science in the classroom. NC Beautiful Window of Opportunity Grant

Target Student Field Trip Grant Program

A philanthropic program of Target Corporation (http://www.target.com/ ), the Target Field Trip Grant program will award grants to schools across the United States for field trips. Grant-funded field trips may involve museum, environmental, or science projects; artistic and cultural experiences; and civics or community service projects. Grants may not be used for salaries or equipment. Up to 1,600 grants of up to $1,000 each will be awarded. Deadline: November 1

AAPT Physics Teacher Grants

The American Association of Physics Teachers High School Physics Teacher Grant will reward a proposal designed to result in better teaching practice, student understanding and interest, and increased class enrollment. The proposal may use a new teaching method or an adaptation of an existing idea. Maximum Award: $1,000. Eligibility: members of AAPT. Deadline: November 1.

Biotechnology Mini-Grants

Applications are now being accepted for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s 2006-2007 Mini-Grant Program. All proposals must be submitted electronically using the Biotechnology Center’s online submission process. Proposals must be received by 5 p.m. on January 24. The Biotechnology Education Mini-Grant Program offers awards of up to $6,000 to assist in the development and implementation of activities, programs, and courses for biotechnology education and training at the K-12 level. Any North Carolina non-profit institution may apply.

Awards for Innovative and Progressive Thinking in Education

The ING Unsung Heroes awards program recognizes innovative and progressive thinking in education. Maximum Award: $27,000. Eligibility: full-time educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, and classified staff members with projects that improve student learning at K-12 public or private schools.

GreenWorks! Grants

GreenWorks! offers educators the opportunity to apply for grants to implement community action and service-learning projects. Applicants must be PLT (Project Learning Tree) trained and provide 50% of the funds for their project.

The Bauder Endowment for the Support of Physics Teaching

The Bauder Endowment for the Support of Physics Teaching The Frederick and Florence Bauder Endowment for the Support of Physics Teaching was established to support special activities in the area of physics teaching.

Activities that the grant can support include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing grants for the development and distribution of innovative apparatus for physics teaching
  • Providing funds to obtain and or build and support traveling exhibits of apparatus, up to $500 will fund local workshops for teachers that spread the use of demonstration and laboratory equipment
  • Providing support for grant projects, provided the Bauder Fund recommends such projects and the AAPT Executive Board approves them.

Only AAPT members can apply. Applications must be received by July 1 for consideration at the Summer Meeting or December 1 for consideration at the Winter Meeting where the grants are awarded. Application materials are available online as PDF or can be requested from:

Chemical Education Foundation Lesson Plan Competition

The Chemical Education Foundation (CEF) is holding a lesson plan competition for K-12 educators. Submitted plans must illustrate a topic in the following categories: Scientific Inquiry; Structure of Matter; and Safety and Recycling. Winners in each category receive $1000 and each runner up receives $500, in addition to having their plans published online. Entries must be postmarked by October 21.

Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards

Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision is an inquiry-based competition for K-12 students that combines science, creativity, technology and collaborative learning with the chance to develop web sites and win up to $10,000 in prizes. Teams of students select an existing technology, then research and describe a scientifically sound use for the technology, as it might exist in twenty years. All students and teachers receive gifts and certificates of participation. The entry deadline will be February.

Donors Choose

At DonorsChoose.org, teachers submit requests for items or experiences that will enhance their students' education. Once screened by volunteers and staff, the proposals are posted on the Web site and donors from all over the country can choose to fund them!

USA TODAY seeks 20 individuals and instructional teams for the All-USA Teacher First Team. Their successes will be described and their photographs published prominently in USA TODAY in October. The teachers receive trophies as representatives of all outstanding teachers, and their schools receive a $2,500 cash award from USA TODAY. The 20 educators named to the Second and Third Teams will be featured in the newspaper and will receive certificates honoring their achievements.
NSTA Awards and Competitions
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) cosponsors about two dozen award competitions for science teachers (some of them listed separately on this page).

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Sponsored by the National Science Foundation. You're eligible if you teach math or science at any grade level K-12. Four North Carolina teachers receive this award each year; awards include a $7500 grant to the school to be spent over three years at the winner's discretion, plus an expense-paid trip to Washington to receive the award, usually from the President himself. Application materials available online. Deadline: February.

Ohaus Programs for Innovation in Science Teaching
These NSTA awards encourage and honor science teachers who have developed innovative programs in new curriculum design, instructional methods or techniques, unique organization, administrative patterns, new approach to laboratory activities, or other enhanced learning activity for students. Deadline: November.

Palm Education Pioneers Program
Grants for innovative uses of Palm handheld computers for K-12 learning through classroom grants to teachers. Applications are due in March, but you need to indicate your interest by February 15.

Toshiba Small Grants for K-6 Science and Math Education
The Toshiba America Foundation offers 75 grants of up of $1,000 each encouraging hands-on teaching of science and mathematics. Deadline: October 1.

AOL Foundation
America Online makes grants of $7,500 to teams of teachers through its Interactive Education Initiative. Deadline: around February 1.

Charter School Teacher Fellowships
The Council for Basic Education (CBE) gives grants to teams of charter school teachers for self-directed study aimed at curricular improvements. Deadline: in March.

Curriculum Associates Excellence in Teaching Cabinet Grants
Curriculum Associates, a publisher of supplemental teaching materials, offers $1,000 cash and $500 in products for creative lesson plan ideas. Deadline: April 30.

Earthwatch Field Research Fellowships
Fellowships to enable teachers to accompany field researchers on environmental research projects during the summer. Deadline: February 1.

Educational Technology Conservation Exchange Program
ETCEP allows schools to recycle used laser and inkjet printer cartridges for credits toward new computing equipment.

FamilyPC Teachers Technology Grants
Grants up to $2,500 for outstanding ideas on implementiung technology in the curriculum. Application forms available online. Deadline: December 1.

Great Aluminum Can Roundup Success Story Awards
The Can Manufacturers Institute awards up to $2000 for projects involving recycling. Deadline: annually during October.

Jordan Fundamentals Grants
The Nike Foundation makes grants of $2500 to middle school and high school teachers who create lessons or units setting high expectations for all students. The program was designed by Michael Jordan. Up to 400 grants are available each year.
Deadline: May 15 and November 1.

Kenan Fellowships for Curriculum and Leadership Development
The Kenan Institute at NC State makes felowship grants to teachers for projects that enhance curriculum relevancy, promote collaboration with businesses and universities, and promote teachers' professional growth. Deadline each year: late March.

Mathematica High School Grants
Wolfram Research, the publisher of the Mathematica mathematics software package, makes grants to high school mathematics for development of course materials using Mathematica. Deadline each year: June 30.

National Gardening Association Youth Garden Grants
NGA awards each year 300 grants of gardening equipment and supplies valued at more than $700. Schools and community organizations are eligible. Complete information and application materials online. Deadline each year: November 15.

NCCTM Mini-Grants
Available for projects promoting excellence in mathematics education in North Carolina. Deadline: September 15 each year.

NCTM Math Education Trust
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has several endowed grant programs for mathematics teachers. Links to details are available on the NCTM web site's announcements page. Other grant announcements are sometimes posted on this page as well.

NFIE Leadership Grants
The National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE), the National Education Association's foundation, provides leadership grants of up to $1,000 to enable teachers to take leadership roles in providing professional development within their own schools. Deadlines: October 15 and April 15.

Northern Life Unsung Heroes Awards
Grants of $2,000 to 80 teachers nationwide, at least one in each state. Teachers submit applications describing projects or methods they use in the classroom. Applications are judged on the creativity of the projects and the benefits to students. Deadline: November 1 each year.

Radio Shack National Teacher Awards
Provides cash awards and Compaq computers to about 100 math, science, and tehnology teachers each year. Separate competitions for new and experienced teachers. Deadline: mid November.

Scholastic Ms. Frizzle Awards
Scholastic offers one $6000 award and several smaller awards for science education projects that foster ongoing creative, hands-on, inquiry-based science learning. Deadline: April 10.

Touchstone Energy Bright Ideas Grants
Grants up to $500 for individual teachers, up to $2000 for teams of teachers, for "innovative, creative and effective initiatives that cannot be covered by traditional school financing."

Verizon Growth Initiatives for Teachers (GIFT)
Verizon (formerly GTE) seeks teams of two teachers, one math and one science, for projects integrating the two subjects through innovative uses of technology. 60 teams receive up to $2500 for professional development and up to $7000 for implementation. Deadline: mid-January.
