Summer Science Leadership Institute a Big Success!

This year’s Summer Science Leadership Institute was held in New Bern, NC on July 14-17 for K-12 Teachers and Science Supervisors.  Over 230 participants shared in the  nearly 80 concurrent sessions and general sessions.  Of key emphasis were the Curriculum Units being published by DPI that align to the NC Standard Course of Study for K-12 Science.  Featured speakers included Angela Quick, Deputy Chief Academic Officer for DPI; Jack Wheatley, NC State Science Education Professor (retired); and Lou Fabrizio, Director of Accountability Services for DPI.

K-12 Curriculum Units Project

After two years of writing and development, NCDPI K-12 Science Curriculum is proud to announce the publication of K-12 Curriculum Units that align to the NC Standard Course of Study.  Teacher teams from across the state wrote and developed the units based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (to pinpoint the cognitive processes and levels of knowledge required for students to master the content as delineated in the Standard Course of Study).  In developing the units, the teacher teams used the 5E Learning Cycle to frame the unit’s activities and guide the teaching and learning.  The draft forms of the units are available online at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/science/units/ for use by North Carolina teachers.  NCDPI Science Staff will be presenting a session on the units and their development at the NSTA Regional in Charlotte.  Final edited copies of the units should be ready for distribution at that time.
