Chemistry

Periodic Table Videos
from Nottingham Unversity, videos for each element of the table including experiments and real world applications.

Visual Representation of the Atom
Here’s a lesson for students in which they demonstrate their understanding of abstract concepts through the creation of a visual representation of the concept. In this lesson, students will create visual representations of the atom to illustrate their understanding of the atom and its elements.

Chemistry of Fire Teachers Kit
Society of Fire Protection Engineers announcing the release of the Chemistry of Fire Teacher’s Kit. This teacher’s kit was a collaboration between the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and Discovery Education. Each high school in the United States has received a copy of this kit in January 2008.

AllPeriodicTables
This interactive online periodic tables allows you to quiz yourself and sort by different parameters. Recommended by Mike Jones.

American Elements
This is a commercial company but the information on elements and other topics is well organized.

Chemistry Pathway
Part of the National Science Digital Library, the site is a collaboration that will include collections of the JCE DLib and the ACS Education Division. An innovative element of the project will use tables of contents of textbooks to locate resources. ChemEd DLib will create new communities centered around different educational levels (such as high school, undergraduate), provide resources in different sub-disciplines of chemistry (such as physical), and different pedagogical areas (such as problem-based learning).

Materials Science Pathway
The NSDL Materials Digital Library (MatDL) brings materials science research and education closer together. MatDL is exploring the various roles digital libraries can serve in the materials science community including: 1) supporting a virtual lab, 2) developing markup language applications, and 3) building tools for metadata capture. MatDL is being integrated into an MIT virtual laboratory experience.

Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) Chemicals in Schools: Solutions for Healthy School Environments
SC3 (from the EPA) encourages school and community partners to properly manage chemicals in schools from purchase through disposal. Together, we can all keep students and school staff safe from chemical dangers. To download customizable versions of the K-12 Schools and Community Partners brochures or for additional information on healthy school environments, go to www.epa.gov/schools. To order free copies of the K-12 Schools (EPA530-F-05-012) or Community Partners (EPA530-F-05-016) brochures, please contact the National Service Center for Environmental Publications (NSCEP) on the Internet
at www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/pub-n, by email at ncepimal@one.net

The Pharmacology Education Partnership (PEP) is an online interactive resource that provides high school teachers with tools to teach biology and chemistry. Students learn basic biology and chemistry concepts using PEP modules that are designed to captivate high school student interest—they include the chemistry and biology of cocaine, nicotine, and steroids. The PEP modules are aligned with the National Science Education Standards; national testing reveals that student achievement in biology and chemistry improves when the PEP modules are used. The program was produced by a partnership between Duke University Medical Center and the North Carolina School for Science & Math, and was funded with a Science Education Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Requires Flash.

The Virtual Museum of Minerals and Molecules
Great visualizations of minerals and molecules

NSF Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes
provides activities for exploring carbon dioxide and polymers. Learn how much carbon dioxide is in a soda. Make carbon dioxide and observe its effects. Create silly putty and oobleck to learn about polymers. Test how much water can be absorbed by polyacrylate (the absorbent polymer in disposable diapers). (NSF)

Chemistry and Materials: Research Overview
looks at the sciences of stuff and some of the greatest challenges in the field today: understanding "emergence" (when the whole adds up to much more than the sum of its parts), creating new materials (high-strength plastics, superconductors, photovoltaic devices), mimicking products and processes of nature, and finding green ways to manufacture products, create chemical reactions, treat waste, and generate energy. (NSF)

Shodor Foundation
The Shodor Education Foundation Center for Computational Science Education has launched a dedicated computer server that is capable of running research-level calculations on small to medium-sized chemical molecules.
The server, funded by BWF and the SMT Center, will provide N.C. high school students and teachers with free access to software for studying individual molecules, reaction mechanisms, and other chemical phenomenon.

WWW Chemistry Guide

Molecular Logic Database
provides 130 model-based activities for learning about interactions of atoms & molecules, & rule-based genetics. Topics include atomic-molecular structures & dynamics, states of matter, reactions, solutions, water & small molecules, bioenergetics, macromolecules, proteins, metabolism regulation, self assembly, & genetic code. Introductory activities serve as "stepping stones" to 10 physical-chemical principles that underlie many biological processes. (NSF)
