2020 NC Energy Literacy Fellows Teacher Professional Development Program (UNC-Chapel Hill)

The 2020 NC Energy Literacy Fellows Teacher Professional Development Program | Exploring the Future of the Electric Grid
A year-long teacher professional development program for grades 8-12 STEM teachers in NC's Duke Energy service territory.
To be eligible you must teach in a school located in either the Duke Energy Progress or Duke Energy Carolinas service territory.  To see if your school is eligible click here and then in the upper left corner, click on select state to navigate to North Carolina.

Founded in 2017, the NC Energy Literacy Fellows Program combines hands-on investigations with place-based explorations of electricity generation facilities, energy research facilities and relevant careers to showcase the knowledge and skills needed to support the low carbon economy and modernize the electric grid. This professional development opportunity will enhance NC Energy Literacy Fellows' ability to deliver energy-related content, conduct STEM-based activities and promote relevant STEM career opportunities.

Connect with other teachers! Any 8th-12th grade STEM teacher who addresses energy in their teaching is eligible to apply. This program will benefit new and experienced teachers!

Construct new knowledge and collect resources that align with the NC Essential Standards for Science and integrate science and engineering practices outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards.

Receive numerous benefits including:

·  over $250 worth of instructional materials to support hands-on STEM investigations
·  access to a peer learning network (2017-2019 Fellows) from across the state
·  credit towards CEUs and the NC EE Certification Program
·  support for sharing your energy-related STEM instructional strategies and successes with other teaching professionals at the district, regional, state and national level.

Prospective Applicants MUST:

  •     Be an 8th-12th grade STEM teacher at a North Carolina school located in a Duke Energy service territory
  •     Have access to a working Internet connection with audio capabilities during evening hours for virtual share sessions (March 2020 and December 2020)
  •     Be available to participate in ALL of the following:
    •   Solar, Wind & Wave Energy: A coastal weekend retreat in Manteo, NC ??(March 13 & 14, 2020)

We’ll tour the Amazon Wind Farm and a utility scale solar farm; we’ll visit the Coastal Studies Institute to learn about wave energy and Jennette’s Pier to conduct a wind energy program. Substitute teacher reimbursement available for Friday March 13th; transportation provided to Manteo from Chapel Hill, overnight lodging and meals provided; mileage reimbursement for personal travel exceeding 60 miles round trip available.

  • Exploring the Future of the Electric Grid: A 3-day Summer Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill (July 14-16, 2020)

We’ll tour UNC’s co-generation plant and take an energy road trip to explore other local energy generation and research facilities. Lodging and meals provided; mileage reimbursement for personal travel exceeding 60 miles round trip available.

  • At least one regional field trip (1/2 day or full day experience) (April – December, 2020)

Potential topics/excursions include: hydropower, microgrids, woody biomass, animal waste to energy; substitute reimbursement and/or travel stipend provided.

All applications must be completed before 9AM on Wednesday February 5th; teachers selected to participate in this program will be notified by email on or before February 14th?, 2020. Upon notification of acceptance, teachers will be asked to submit a $100 deposit check to reserve their spot in the program. The deposit check will not be deposited unless teacher cancels and spot cannot be filled; it would then be considered a tax-deductible gift to the Institute for the Environment. The deposit check will be returned at the end of the summer institute on July 16th, 2020.
