DATASTREME OCEAN begins its Fall Semester on Monday, August 26, 2019 – and there are spaces available!
Calling all North Carolina educators, both classroom and informal! Are you interested in adding to your curriculum to meet STEM standards? The American Meteorological Society (AMS) offers an on-line course for K-12 teachers to help you brush up on your ocean science.
DATASTREME OCEAN, supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a semester-long course that offers educators solid subject knowledge to teach about the ocean in any science curriculum or to use the ocean as a unifying concept with any subject area or grade level. As a classroom teacher or an informal educator, you will benefit by supplementing your core knowledge about ocean/marine science.
DataStreme Ocean 1) focuses on the study of the ocean through the use of online data and learning materials; and 2) trains you as an Ocean Education Resource Teacher to promote the teaching of science, mathematics, and technology using the ocean as a vehicle across the K-12 curriculum in your home school district. After completion of the course, you will have access to a network of education resources to help you build the ocean into your curriculum.
Successful participants will receive three (3) hours of graduate credit in science through California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U). The main cost to you (besides the academic and course fees) is your time – time to complete the weekly investigations and current ocean studies. This course will require 3 to 6 hours of focused work each week depending on your science background and experience.
There is a non-refundable academic fee of $150 required of all course participants. In addition, AMS charges a course fee of $300 per student to cover the organization’s costs (discounted rate for AMS members = $200) – so the total cost per semester will be $350 to $450 for Fall 2019 and Spring 2020, starting this semester!
FYI: 2019 AMS K-12 teacher membership fee is only $57/year – membership information can be found at https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/membership/memberships-for/enthusiasts/
This course (tuition value at Cal U $1900) is delivered online in weekly installments with access to mentors; all materials and texts (valued at $144) are provided online to participants.

PLEASE NOTE: If interested, you must contact Terri Kirby Hathaway ASAP to request a DS Ocean application. Once you complete this application and return it to Terri, Cal U will contact you regarding payment of the non-refundable fees, due by the end of the business day on Wednesday, August 16. After payment is received, you will be given specific instructions for proceeding with course registration on the Cal U website.
The first day of the fall semester of DS OCEAN is Monday, August 26, 2019.
