District 4 Director - Julia Smajdek
Biographical Information
Julia Smajdek is a passionate and experienced educator originally from North Ridgeville, Ohio. She began her academic journey at Lorain County Community College, where she earned an associate degree, and later continued her studies at The University of Toledo, earning a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. Following her undergraduate education, Julia relocated to North Carolina, where she has been a dedicated elementary school teacher for the past 18 years. Throughout her career, she has taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades, bringing flexibility, creativity, and a student-centered approach to each classroom setting. Julia is currently furthering her professional development by pursuing a Master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Walden University. Her commitment to lifelong learning and educational excellence underscores her dedication to making a meaningful impact on her students and the broader field of education.
Mission Statement
As a dedicated educator with 18 years of experience teaching elementary students across multiple grade levels in North Carolina, I am passionate about fostering a love for learning and promoting excellence in science education. My journey--from earning an associate degree at Lorain County Community College to obtaining a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Toledo, and currently pursuing a Master's in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Walden University--reflects my commitment to continuous professional growth and high-quality instruction. If selected as the District 4 Chair for NCSTA, my mission is to support and empower science educators by fostering collaboration, sharing innovative instructional practices, and advocating for equitable access to high-quality science education for all students. I am committed to strengthening teacher support networks, encouraging professional development opportunities, and promoting inquiry-based, culturally responsive science instruction that prepares students to think critically and engage meaningfully with the world around them. Through service, leadership, and a shared vision for excellence, I aim to contribute to NCSTA's mission and help ensure that science educators in District 4 are inspired, supported, and equipped to make a lasting impact in their classrooms and communities.
